Memory Canvas Workshop

Grief is a phase everyone has to pass at some point in life. Whether a loved one passes away, you lose your job or your relationship. Grief is a natural reaction to process this loss. Everybody has a personal way to process this.

The Memory Canvas Workshop stimulated the participants to start the grieving process on a pleasant and constructive way. It is all about ‘holding on to & letting go’:

Holding on to the memories you have of your loved one.

And letting go, by going through all the phases of grief. Accepting the fact of the loss and returning to society as a stronger person.

The design is a workshop with a creative medium to extract the memories and emotions people have about their loved ones. This medium – Memory Canvas – becomes a special souvenir for the creator and the relationship with the deceased.

A grief therapist will host the workshop and guides the bereaved on a secure and comfortable way. The host will support them in expressing their thoughts, emotions and memories in order to translate this into a physical memory.

Short project description

The Master Graduation Project is an individual project that ran from September 2009 to April 2010. The aim of this project was ‘designing for grief & reminiscence’ and social interaction. The goal of this project was to create a product or system with a related service to support the bereaved and incubating the above mentioned aspects by conducting user and design research.

The essence of the final concept should be to support the bereaved, considering:

Grieving process,

Creating a safe feeling within the family to express emotions of fear, shame, guilt or any other,

Creating a personal souvenir that means more than a devotional card (bidprent).

Spinning in Control: Design Exploration of a Cross-Device Remote

This project has been presented and demoed at the TEI’11 in Funchal, Portugal. The publication is part of the conference proceedings.

ABSTRACT

You buy a new TV and get a new remote, you buy a DVD player and you get another remote, you buy a sound system and guess what… Almost every digital media product comes with its own designated remote control (RC). What would happen if one remote adapts to the owner‟s activities and is able to have cross-device control? In this paper we describe a design exploration conducted to create new ways to interact with digital media products. The main ingredients are: fit for a social setting, portable, and including physical interaction. The result is an exploration of a button less single-hand remote control concept.

The “Smart tEchnologies for Stress free Air Travel” (S.E.A.T.) project is an European consortium in which the Eindhoven University of Technology has its focus on the physical and mental comfort aspects related the sitting comfort on long-haul flights.

Within the research project the goal was to analyze the current seating positions, to find out how people use to sleep and sit in Economy Class seats.

Case studies

From three studies have been conducted to get a clear idea the behaviour of sleeping passengers. This information was used to design a system to that measures the head and shoulder posture.

This created system can be implemented in a upgrade of the flight-lab. By measuring the sitting posture preventive feedback can be implemented to decrease effects of fatigue and mental discomfort during long-haul travel. For example: inflating or altering the position of the neck support or starting a built-in neck-massager.

Publication

A paper, containing the research, has been accepted at the World Congress on Engineering 2009:

Object+ are four skatable objects enriched by interactive technology. This allows skaters to have visual feedback on their skate performance.

Open-ended skateboarding

Skaters have several ways to approach an obstacle when standing on the board:

Jump over, Grind on, Go around, and Land on it

The purpose of Object+ is to provide the skateboarders with a new open-ended way to play games while being on the board. Object+ allows the skaters to receive visual cues about distances, time, score and contact. These values can be used to perform new game variations during boarding, for example:

Distance or height of the jump

Parcours: score more points, or be faster

Agility & balance: bump into the Object and the score will reset

Fit the skateboarder

The look & feel of the Object+ fits the image skaters have:

Tough, rough, cool, relaxed, masculine,
Loyal, helpful and sociable

The shape allows it to be stacked in different ways, for example around the corner in a ‘bowl’.

The looks are black and rugged and big, to make it look extra tough.

Skateboarding stays skateboarding

But most important in the Object+

should add something to skateboarding and not change the foundations of skateboarding.

Interaction

Object+ enriches skateboardin with new possibilities to interact and new forms of game play. Through interaction possibilities:

Blue and Red LED’s to provide feedback

Tilt switches to reset the ‘score’ of blue or red LED’s bars

Distance sensors to measure skaters jump over or past the Object+

Q is a social and tangible media allocation system. All digital media content is linked to the system and distributable to linked output devices.

Play & share

With Q you can listen to your music, watch your movies and photos or view your documents. With content dedicated tokens you can load, re-locate and share your data. The tokens are the data container and are instantly mobile: Pick them up and take them to another Q!

The physical limitation through the shape of the tokens and ‘media cubes’ will guide and restrict the user to the appropriate output device.

One week: From scratch to concept

Q is the result of a one-week module where foundations and theories were presented. One activity was the visit of the TEI’08 conference in Bonn, Germany.

The input from the conference, the theoretical backgrounds were implemented into the design of Q, a tangible media product.

Rhythm of Life Application

One in ten premature newborns lack a normal cardiac function at birth.

Medical staff are being

trained to respond to this critical situation, but unfortunately the reanimation procedure can lack efficiency. The decrease in efficiency is caused by: stress, inexperience or lager intervals between training and actual reanimation.

This project was in corporation with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)of the Maxima Medisch Centrum (Veldhoven, the Netherlands).

Functions

The Rhythm of Life Application or ROLA is a device that supports the NICU-staff in their work to reanimate these prematures. The ROLA has two functions:

Feedforward: audio signal that provides the right rhythm to hold on to for the reanimation

Feedback: to visualize the pressure used to reanimate

Both function to aid the medical staff in their work to save the child’s life.

Light pattern of ROLA feedback

ROLA test

Aftermath: A project team of the ID bachelor program conducted research with the prototype on the effects of it on the quality of the reanimation. Concluding that the feedforward and feedback functions help the medical staff to significantly increase the efficiency of the reanimation.

Paper on the design and the research has been submitted to IEEE Transaction on Information Technology in Biomedicine:

W Chen, S Bambang Oetomo, L Feijs, P Andriessen, F Kimman, M Geraets, and M Thielen (2009). Rhythm of Life Aid (ROLA) –An Integrated Sensor System for Supporting Medical Staff during Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) of Newborn Infants.
